At Wedge Oak Farm, we collect all of our chicken litter from brooding chicks, grass, leaves, kitchen refuse, shredded unbleached egg cartons and flats, and lots of other great matter to generate a usable organic, rich compost for our gardens and as a way to divert waste from the Wilson County Landfill.
We layer each new load brought in with an alternating load of green or brown material.
While we do turn and work the material regularrly with our tractor, we remember that diesel is expensive and nature can do much of this on it's own.
A compost heap with adequate water, proper aeration and lots of materials can make the best rich humus for your gardens. Or you can just focus on making good dirt and not sending these materials to the landfill. We are "pro" anything we can recycle!
